Return to Varosha

HomeWelcomeOct 25, 2008

Welcome to the Return to Varosha Group

Famagusta developed to the south of the old town, in the area of the relatively new town of Varosha, with its long beach backed by modern hotels.Today Varosha is no more than an empty ghost town. It lies in a UN zone between the Republic of Cyprus and the occupied areas, and is presently occupied by the Turkish Army. As the occupants fled from the fighting of the Turkish invasion, Varosha remained empty as it became part of an eery no-mans-land between makeshift borderlines. Washed clothes were left drying on washing lines - electric lights were left burning for years until the bulbs finally failed. Varosha remains a bargaining counter - a symbol of the madness and the tragedy of those awful summer days of 1974

Hello,

I am an Austrian Student of Architecture, currently working on my
Diploma Thesis. My work is about the region of Varosha and Famagusta,
where I try to develope future scenarios for the area, taking the
political as well as the economic situation into consideration.
The main focus of attention of my research would be the dichotomy of
IMAGE & IDENTITY of Varosha.
Therefore I want to analyse e.g. where the inhabitents of Varosha went
and what jobs they have today. The output of this 1st step would then
be a Migration-Mind-Map of Cyprus.
Furthermore I want to show the potentials of Varosha, to work on a
possible process of re-inhabiting of the city as my last step.

For me it is very difficult to acquire information because of access -
as well as language problems.
Is there any interest in this topic and developments in this area from
your side? Do you have any information of that Region you could share
me? Is there maybe an institution or division working on that project
that could eventually advise me through the most difficult 1st step,
or are there any possibilities of collaboration?

Thank you very much for your help!!
I would really appreciate any information concerning this topic I'm
really interested in.

Best,
Thomas

I spend my entire childhood in an abandoned house of a Greek Cypriot which was given to my grandmother equivalent to her house that she had to leave in Larnaka. My grandmother was hoping to turn back to her true "home" in Larnaka someday; however she passed away before she even saw that they opened up the borders to cross over. I played at the edge of ghost town Varosha, looking to that strange city over barbered wires and this has affected me for a life time. I am an architect; but Varosha made me to study in Environmental Psychology aspects of architecture, I even did many researches about it. I really wished and hope that each refugee from Cyprus can return "HOME" someday... love&peace - Ceren Bogac

Great photographs. Reminded me of the holidays we took in 1972 and 1973. We stayed at the Cypriana hotel. Does anyone know which of the ariel photograps show this hotel?
thanks

Hey , i went here on holiday to Cyprus this year. Protaras to be exact we took a one day excursion to Famagusta and it involved walking along the sea front next to some of the old buildings , as a 13 year old i found it hard to believe how this could have happened to a holiday resort as the holiday resort is nearly as big as my home town , looking through the green fencing that now surrounds varosha i could see books still on the reception desks , and on one balcony a towel wrapped several times around a pole on the balcony wall. All the rooms looked empty but i imagine that they're not. i really do feel for all those that were in this holiday resort at the time of the horrible incident. You must have been terrified. i hope one day Varosha is restored to what it used to be it doesn't deserve to be left that way .
